Jon christened the sword Needle, in homage to Arya's least favorite hobby of needlework. After arriving in King's Landing, Arya's father, Eddard Stark, then the King's Hand, hired Syrio Forel, a Braavosi waterdancer, to teach Arya how to use her new blade. Syrio taught her that and more, preparing her for what was to come later. When Arya would return from practice sweaty and sore, and Septa Mordane would ask where she had been, Arya could truthfully say she had been doing "Needlework" all along.
